**Beirut/New York/London** – Israel’s relentless airstrikes on Lebanon have sparked international alarm, with world leaders warning of a full-fledged war in the region. The attacks, which began on Monday and continued into Tuesday, have resulted in the highest single-day death toll in Lebanon since the end of its civil war in 1990.
The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported 558 fatalities, including 50 children and 94 women. At least 1,835 people were wounded, and 54 hospitals are struggling to cope with the influx of patients.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed “grave alarm” at the escalating situation and the “large number of civilian casualties,” urging a return to diplomacy. UN human rights officials called for independent investigations into incidents where civilians were killed or injured, stressing the need to distinguish between military and civilian targets.
International condemnation of Israel’s actions has been widespread. The G7, including the US, Canada, and the UK, called for a halt to the “destructive cycle” that threatens to engulf the Middle East in a broader conflict. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warned that the region is “almost in a full-fledged war.”
Several countries, including Turkey, Egypt, France, and China, have urged immediate de-escalation and called for a ceasefire. The US, while maintaining contact with both Israel and Hezbollah, has deployed additional troops to the region as a precautionary measure.
Iran, a key ally of Hezbollah, accused Israel of attempting to draw it into a conflict with “irreversible consequences.”
The escalation in Lebanon comes amidst Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. Experts warn that the situation is volatile and could easily spiral out of control, with the potential for devastating consequences for the region and beyond.
