**Scranton, PA** – In a surprise visit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to workers at the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant, one of the few facilities in the United States producing the 155 mm artillery shells crucial to Ukraine’s defense against Russia.
Zelenskyy, under tight security, met with workers at the plant on Sunday, thanking them for their contribution to the war effort. He emphasized the need for continued production, stating, “Thank you. And we need more.”
The Scranton plant has significantly increased production of 155 mm shells in the past year, supplying Ukraine with over 3 million rounds. These shells are vital for howitzer systems, which are highly effective in engaging enemy targets from a distance.
Zelenskyy’s visit comes as he seeks to bolster international support for Ukraine during a busy week in the United States. He is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by meetings with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington on Thursday.
The visit sparked appreciation from local Ukrainian Americans, who expressed gratitude for the plant’s role in protecting Ukraine and the world. One resident, Vera Kowal Krewson, stated, “It’s unfortunate that we need a plant like this, but it’s here, and it’s here to protect the world.”
The United States has been a major contributor to Ukraine’s defense, providing over $56 billion in aid, including a range of weaponry. However, Zelenskyy continues to push for permission to use longer-range missile systems capable of striking deeper into Russia, a request the Pentagon has yet to approve.
The visit highlights the ongoing global efforts to support Ukraine, while also emphasizing the vital role of US industrial production in the conflict.
