**Kursk, Russia** – Ukrainian forces have reportedly broken through a section of the Russian border in the Kursk region, according to a statement by the 95th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade on Monday. This marks the second successful incursion into Russian territory since the start of Ukraine’s offensive in the region, which began over six weeks ago.
While the brigade did not specify the location or date of the breakthrough, they released footage claiming to show Ukrainian troops entering enemy territory and engaging in initial battles. The aim of this operation is likely similar to the ongoing offensive in Kursk, which aims to pressure Russia in potential negotiations, boost Ukrainian morale, and demonstrate Kyiv’s offensive capabilities.
Western analysts suggest that Russia has recently regained territory south of Korenovo, which was a key focus of Ukraine’s push. However, the latest reports indicate ongoing fighting in the area, with Ukrainian forces utilizing NATO-provided equipment, including a German-made Leopard tank, which was reportedly destroyed near Veseloe.
Battles have also been reported around Nikolayevo-Darino, south of Korenovo, and near the settlement of Glushkovo.
The Russian government has confirmed two attempts by Ukrainian forces to breach the border in the direction of Novy Put, a settlement situated on the border.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated last week that the Kursk offensive has drawn approximately 40,000 Russian soldiers into the area, highlighting its strategic importance.
Newsweek could not independently verify these battlefield reports, and both the Russian and Ukrainian defense ministries have been contacted for comment.
