**WASHINGTON** – The United States is sending a small contingent of troops to the Middle East in response to the escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, the Pentagon announced today.

The deployment comes as Israel shifts its focus from the ongoing war in Gaza to its northern border, where Hezbollah has been launching rocket attacks in support of Hamas. Israel has retaliated with widespread strikes across Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah infrastructure and senior leaders.

The Pentagon declined to specify the number or mission of the deployed forces, stating only that the move was “out of an abundance of caution.”

“We have more capability in the region today than we did on April 14th when Iran conducted its drone and missile attack against Israel,” said Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesperson.

The deployment follows calls from the Biden administration for a diplomatic resolution to the Israel-Lebanon border crisis. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has been in daily contact with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, urging restraint and emphasizing that no outside actors should intervene in the conflict.

Experts warn that a regional war could erupt if Iran feels compelled to defend Hezbollah, potentially putting US troops at risk. The Pentagon maintains that its forces are postured to protect US personnel and deter any escalation.

The deployment comes as tensions in the Middle East reach a fever pitch, with the Gaza conflict showing no signs of abating and the potential for the conflict to spill over into Lebanon looming large.
