Mon Sep 23 17:53:56 UTC 2024: ## US to Ban Chinese Software and Hardware in Cars, Raising Concerns in Canada

The United States is proposing a ban on Chinese software and hardware in connected vehicles due to national security concerns, the White House announced on Monday. This move could effectively bar all Chinese-made cars from the American market.

The proposed regulation, which is still being finalized, would also force American and other global automakers to remove Chinese software and hardware from vehicles sold in the U.S. in the coming years. The White House claims that this is necessary to prevent foreign adversaries from using such technology for surveillance, remote control, and potentially disrupting road safety.

The ban has raised concerns in Canada, which has already imposed tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) and is considering further restrictions. Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association, urged Canada to match the U.S. measures.

While there are currently few Chinese-made cars imported to the U.S. and Canada, the U.S. government argues that this action is necessary to prevent Chinese technology from becoming commonplace and posing a greater risk in the future.

The move is the latest in a series of crackdowns on Chinese technology by the Biden administration, including a potential ban on the popular social media app TikTok.

The Alliance For Automotive Innovation, representing major automakers, has warned that changing hardware and software could be time-consuming, and it remains unclear how prevalent Chinese-made components are in U.S. vehicles.

Experts have warned that further tariffs on Chinese components could strain supply chains and drive up prices for EVs. Clean Energy Canada has advocated for lower tariffs and an EV affordability package, including extending the federal incentive program and ensuring access to charging in apartment buildings.

Canada and the U.S. are both seeking to establish their own domestic EV manufacturing bases, but this move could complicate efforts to create a North American supply chain.
