Tue Sep 24 03:41:16 UTC 2024: ## Indian Navy Women Officers Embark on Historic Solo Circumnavigation of the Globe

**Goa, India -** Two Indian Navy women officers, Lieutenant Commanders Dilna K and Roopa A, have embarked on a groundbreaking expedition to circumnavigate the globe solo. Their voyage, named “Navika Sagar Parikrama,” will span eight months and cover a distance of 21,600 nautical miles, showcasing their exceptional courage and endurance.

The officers will sail aboard the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Tarini, relying solely on wind power for the entire journey. Their route will take them through the treacherous waters of three great capes: Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn, and Cape of Good Hope.

This expedition marks a significant milestone for India, with the women officers becoming the first from the nation to achieve a solo circumnavigation in a double-handed mode.

“We are fully prepared for the voyage,” Lieutenant Commander Roopa stated, emphasizing the rigorous three-year training regimen that prepared them for this arduous challenge. Lieutenant Commander Dilna added that the voyage will highlight India’s maritime prowess and commitment to global exploration.

Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan hailed the expedition, highlighting its significance in demonstrating the exceptional valor and perseverance of the two officers.

The Navika Sagar Parikrama expedition was inspired by the inaugural voyage in 2017, when an all-women crew of six officers successfully circumnavigated the globe.

Captain Dilip Donde, the first Indian to circumnavigate the globe in 2009-10, and Commander Abhilash Tomy, the first Asian skipper to complete two circumnavigations and the Golden Globe Race in 2022, have served as mentors for the two officers, providing invaluable guidance and support.
