Former President Donald Trump has accused the Biden administration of “mishandling and downplaying” the second assassination attempt on his life this year. The statement comes following the arrest of Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old man suspected of targeting Trump at his Florida golf course.

Routh was initially charged with possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number. However, Trump claims the charges are a “slap on the wrist” and that the Justice Department and FBI are deliberately minimizing the incident.

“The Kamala Harris/Joe Biden Department of Justice and FBI are mishandling and downplaying the second assassination attempt on my life since July,” Trump stated in a scathing statement. He went on to accuse the DOJ and FBI of “weaponized lawfare” and of being biased against him, citing various investigations and legal proceedings against him since he announced his first presidential campaign.

Trump pointed to a previous incident in July where he was allegedly shot at during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. In that incident, the alleged shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by Secret Service agents.

Trump also criticized FBI Director Christopher Wray for initially casting doubt on the shooting incident in Pennsylvania, calling Wray’s comments “disgraceful” and accusing him of a “retraction” after facing public backlash.

The former president has called for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to take the lead in investigating and prosecuting Routh, arguing that the state would handle the case with greater integrity than the federal government.

“If the DOJ and FBI cannot do their job honestly and without bias,” Trump wrote, “Governor Ron DeSantis and the State of Florida have already agreed to take the lead on the investigation and prosecution.”

This incident has once again highlighted the tense political climate in the US, with Trump continuing to make inflammatory statements and accuse his opponents of targeting him. His claims of a “corrupt” and “discredited” justice system are likely to further fuel the political divide in the country.
