**Washington, D.C.** – Just days after former President Donald Trump claimed that women are “less safe on the streets than they were four years ago,” the FBI released a report showing a significant decline in violent crime in 2023. The report, which draws data from law enforcement agencies across the U.S., found that national violent crime decreased by approximately 3% in 2023 compared to the previous year.
The report also revealed a substantial drop in murder and non-negligent manslaughter, which were down 11.6% overall. Rape offenses saw a decrease of 9.4%, aggravated assault fell by 2.8%, and robberies were down 0.3% nationally.
These findings directly contradict Trump’s repeated claims that crime is rampant in the United States, particularly targeting women. This claim, which he has used as a key talking point in his 2024 presidential campaign, has been repeatedly refuted by both the FBI and the Justice Department.
In June, the Justice Department announced that 2024 is on track to see a historic decline in violent crime, with the first quarter of the year showing a drop of over 15% compared to the same period in 2023. Murder rates have also fallen by more than 26% in 2024 compared to the same time last year.
Despite this overwhelming evidence, Trump continues to dismiss the FBI’s reports as “fraud” and maintains that immigrants are responsible for the supposed increase in crime. However, research by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that immigrants and asylum seekers are significantly less likely to be incarcerated than U.S.-born men.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris both credited the American Rescue Plan, which provided billions of dollars to cities and states for public safety initiatives, with contributing to the decrease in violent crime. They also emphasized the need for continued efforts to address crime, including a ban on assault weapons and increased investment in police forces.
While the Biden administration has called for police reform legislation, it has yet to secure passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a bill aimed at addressing police misconduct and violence against communities of color.
This latest FBI report provides further evidence that crime rates are decreasing in the United States, directly contradicting Trump’s claims and highlighting the importance of relying on accurate data to inform policy decisions.
