Mon Sep 23 22:53:39 UTC 2024: ## Thousands Flee Southern Lebanon as Israeli Airstrikes Intensify

**BEIRUT, LEBANON** – Thousands of families from southern Lebanon are fleeing their homes, packing cars and minivans with essential belongings, and heading north to Beirut to escape the deadliest Israeli bombardment since 2006. The exodus began on Monday, September 23rd, as Israel intensifies its air campaign against Hezbollah.

Since October, when Hezbollah and Israeli forces began exchanging fire, an estimated 100,000 people living near the border had already been displaced. With the fighting escalating, the number of evacuees is expected to rise dramatically.

Schools in Beirut and beyond are being repurposed to accommodate the influx of refugees, with volunteers working tirelessly to secure water, medicine, and basic supplies. In the coastal city of Sidon, families are streaming into schools, many waiting on sidewalks as they lack even mattresses to sleep on.

Ramzieh Dawi, who fled her village of Yarine with her husband and daughter, described the haste of their escape, saying she only brought a few essentials. Fatima Chehab, who fled with her three daughters from Nabatieh, detailed the harrowing experience of being displaced twice, first to her brother’s house and then fleeing again after Israeli strikes targeted nearby locations.

The Israeli military has warned residents of eastern and southern Lebanon to evacuate ahead of a widening air campaign targeting Hezbollah weapons sites. Officials reported over 490 deaths and 1,240 injuries in Lebanon on Monday, a devastating toll in a country still recovering from a recent communication device attack widely blamed on Israel.

Despite the fear and desperation, some remain defiant, like Yahya Abu Ali, who fled with his family, saying, “Don’t think that an airplane or a missile will defeat us.”

The humanitarian situation in Lebanon is critical, with the country already facing severe economic hardship and the aftermath of the 2020 port explosion. The United Nations has allocated $24 million in emergency funding for those affected by the conflict.

The escalating violence raises serious concerns for the stability of Lebanon and the region as the humanitarian crisis deepens.
