EPCOT, often seen as the forgotten theme park in Walt Disney World, received minimal attention during the recent D23 Expo. While other parks received updates, EPCOT’s only notable addition is a revamped Test Track.
This lack of attention has fans wondering why the park is seemingly stagnant, especially considering the recent completion of the CommuniCore Hall and Plaza, which have received lukewarm reviews. Hopes for a new attraction in the former Body Wars Pavilion or even a new country in World Showcase were dashed, despite ongoing rumors about the addition of Spain or Brazil.
Now, a recently unearthed video reveals a fascinating piece of EPCOT history: plans for a Russian Pavilion in World Showcase, dating back to the early 1990s.
This ambitious project would have included iconic landmarks like Red Square and the Kremlin, alongside an 800-seat theater showcasing Russian history and a dark ride based on the fairy tale “Ivan and the Magic Pike.” The pavilion, nearly double the size of other World Showcase nations, would have stood next to the Germany Pavilion, potentially where the current Outpost is located.
However, despite the video’s optimistic tone, the Russian Pavilion never materialized. While no official explanation was given, the project may have been scrapped due to geopolitical issues between the US and Russia, or possibly financial constraints in post-Soviet Russia.
This revelation highlights EPCOT’s long history of ambitious, yet unrealized, projects, leaving fans to wonder when, and if, another country will be added to World Showcase.
