Mon Sep 23 21:08:01 UTC 2024: ## Microsoft Teams VDI Now Generally Available for Azure Virtual Desktops and Windows 365

**Redmond, WA – September 23, 2024** – Microsoft has officially launched the general availability of its new Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) build of Microsoft Teams, enabling users connected to virtual desktops via Azure Virtual Desktops or Windows 365 to utilize the enhanced platform.

The new VDI version of Teams leverages the same engine used by the Windows Teams app, allowing for quicker feature integration and eliminating the need for VDI infrastructure upgrades.

Microsoft has released an FAQ for virtual desktop administrators, providing guidance on updating to the new VDI version of Teams, including instructions for downloading the latest version of either the old Remote Desktop app or the newly released Windows app. The new app features a plugin that downloads the SlimCore, a new media engine.

The update requires a single restart, as the first launch will use the old WebRTC-based optimization. Teams will then attempt to open a virtual channel and, if a plugin is present, will switch to SlimCore upon the next restart.

While the old WebRTC-based version of Teams for virtual desktops will no longer receive new features, it will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security updates. There is no announced end-of-support date for the old version.

Microsoft is working on adding support for Mac and Linux users for the new Teams VDI, but no release date has been confirmed.
