The New Tolerance Campaign (NTC) has issued a $1 million challenge to LGBTQ advocacy groups, calling for them to demonstrate their commitment to Palestinian LGBTQ+ rights. The challenge, launched last Monday, calls on groups like “Queers for Palestine” or any US-based LGBTQ advocacy organization to host a gay pride parade in the West Bank or Gaza.
So far, no group has accepted the offer, highlighting the disparity in human rights between Israel and the Palestinian territories. NTC argues that the silence of LGBTQ advocacy groups like the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) on the plight of Palestinian LGBTQ+ individuals exposes a hypocrisy in their purported commitment to global LGBTQ+ rights.
The campaign aims to expose the anti-Israel bias of some leftist groups who have co-opted the “Queers for Palestine” label to push an anti-Western narrative, often neglecting the severe realities faced by LGBTQ+ individuals under the Hamas regime in Gaza.
Homosexuality is criminalized across the Middle East, including the Palestinian territories, with LGBTQ+ individuals facing severe persecution. This stark reality stands in stark contrast to the rhetoric of groups who claim to be fighting for their rights.
NTC’s challenge serves as a call to action for these groups, demanding they move beyond rhetoric and demonstrate genuine commitment to the well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals in Palestine. The campaign also criticizes the selective advocacy of groups like HRC, which prioritize issues like travel advisories for Florida while remaining silent on the suffering of Palestinian LGBTQ+ individuals.
The NTC hopes that the $1 million challenge will force these groups to confront their own hypocrisy and prioritize the universal fight for LGBTQ+ rights, regardless of location or political context.
