Mon Sep 23 22:35:58 UTC 2024: ## Aggies Eye Improvement Despite Win Over Bowling Green, Face Tough Test Against Arkansas
Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko expressed satisfaction with his team’s 26-20 victory over Bowling Green on Saturday, but highlighted the need for improvement as they prepare for their SEC opener against Arkansas.
Despite stacking three consecutive wins, Elko acknowledged the inconsistent performance, particularly a shaky third quarter that allowed Bowling Green back into the game. He praised redshirt freshman quarterback Marcel Reed for another solid performance, but emphasized the need for more complete games.
“We were very choppy,” said Elko. “There were too many negatives that we need to get fixed.”
The Aggies now face a Razorbacks team fresh off a victory over Auburn, with quarterback Taylen Green posing a unique challenge. Green’s dual-threat ability as a runner and passer has been a key weapon for Arkansas, forcing defenses to pay extra attention. Elko emphasized the difficulty of defending a player with such explosive playmaking potential, requiring careful planning and execution.
“It’s way more complicated than just having a spy on him,” explained Elko. “You have to figure out who needs to pay attention to him as the play develops.”
Saturday’s matchup will be the last Southwest Classic at AT&T Stadium, adding a layer of importance to the rivalry. Both Elko and running back Le’Veon Moss acknowledged the unique atmosphere and the motivation it brings.
“It’s going to be a big challenge, it’s the last year we’ll play in that stadium,” said Elko. “We’re excited for the opportunity and excited to go up there and put our best brand of football on display.”
With a history of success against Arkansas, the Aggies aim to maintain focus and capitalize on the opportunity to showcase their strengths. The game kicks off at 2:30 p.m. on ABC.
