**South Morang, Victoria** – The Lakes South Morang College has been awarded a state prize and earned a national nomination for their performance at the Wakakirri Story-Dance Festival. The school’s story, “The Fabric of You,” which explores the journey of embracing individuality, won the Health and Well-being Story Award at the state finals on September 13th.
The Wakakirri Festival, a national program dedicated to promoting student engagement and wellbeing through the performing arts, encourages schools to create story-dances. “The Fabric of You” delves into themes of self-acceptance, confidence, and the importance of individuality amidst societal pressures.
Aimee Freind, the school’s performance coordinator, praised the transformative impact of the Wakakirri project on the students. “The lockdowns had a negative impact on their self-esteem and confidence in performing, but this opportunity allowed them to rediscover their passion and talent for dance and drama,” she said.
Ms. Freind added, “We’ve witnessed our students shine in new ways, building strong connections across year levels and demonstrating impressive commitment and determination. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and the meaningful work they have created.”
The Lakes South Morang College now awaits the national awards ceremony, hoping to bring home another prestigious prize for their inspiring story-dance.
