Mon Sep 23 20:36:31 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka’s Leftist Leader Takes Office, Promises Change Amid Economic Crisis

**COLOMBO, Sri Lanka** – Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of Sri Lanka’s leftist National People’s Power (NPP) alliance, was sworn in as president on Monday, vowing to usher in a new era of change in the island nation grappling with its worst economic crisis in decades.

Dissanayake, popularly known as AKD, won the presidency with a landslide victory, garnering 1.27 million more votes than his closest rival. His win comes after months of economic turmoil that saw widespread protests culminating in the ouster of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The 55-year-old leader pledged to uphold democracy and combat corruption, emphasizing the need for a “cleaner” political system. “Our politics needs to be cleaner, and the people have called for a different political culture,” he said during his inauguration. “I am ready to commit to that change.”

Dissanayake faces the daunting task of steering Sri Lanka out of its economic quagmire. The country is currently reliant on a $2.9 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which requires a series of fiscal reforms. However, investors are concerned that Dissanayake’s desire to revisit the terms of the bailout could delay future disbursements.

The new president also inherits a fractured parliament, where his party holds only three out of 225 seats. He will need to secure parliamentary support to pass a budget and implement necessary economic reforms.

Sri Lanka’s neighbors, including India, Pakistan, the Maldives, and China, have congratulated Dissanayake on his victory.

The inauguration marks a significant shift in Sri Lanka’s political landscape, signaling a potential departure from the influence of powerful political families that have long dominated the country. The upcoming weeks and months will be crucial as Dissanayake navigates the complex challenges facing the nation.
