Temple Sholom, Kozberg’s Reform congregation, has stated that he “has come to a better understanding of the situation” and will be pursuing “teshuvah,” the Jewish process of repentance. The congregation has also emphasized that Kozberg will remain employed as their rabbi.
However, the damage has already been done. Several Jewish groups have issued statements condemning the “demonization” of the Haitian community, while local Haitian leader Viles Dorsainvil expressed his disappointment at Kozberg’s comments.
Despite the controversy, the Dayton Jewish Federation has reached out to the Haitian community, offering their support and highlighting their commitment to welcoming immigrants. Dorsainvil expressed appreciation for the federation’s gesture, noting the similarities between the experiences of Jewish immigrants and Haitian migrants in the face of discrimination.
