**GLENDALE, Ariz.** – Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta has been diagnosed with a low ankle sprain, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. The injury occurred during Sunday’s 20-13 victory over the Arizona Cardinals while blocking on a touchdown play.
LaPorta initially left the game in the second quarter after being carted off the field, but returned briefly in the third quarter. He was visibly hampered by the injury and ultimately exited the game.
“He had an ankle sprain,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed on Monday. “He’s day to day.”
The injury is a setback for LaPorta, who is coming off a Pro Bowl rookie season where he set a record for most receptions by a rookie tight end (86). He has struggled to find consistency in Year 2, registering eight receptions for 94 yards through three games. He was also sidelined during training camp with a hamstring injury.
The Lions will be hoping for a quick recovery for LaPorta, who plays a crucial role in their offense. His status for this week’s game remains unclear.
