Tue Sep 24 04:21:34 UTC 2024: ## Small Tsunami Waves Hit Remote Japanese Islands After Offshore Earthquake

**Tokyo, Japan** – A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck off the coast of the Izu Islands in Japan on Tuesday morning, triggering small tsunami waves that washed ashore on several remote islands. While the quake itself was not felt by residents, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami advisory, warning of potential waves up to 1 meter above tide levels.

The advisory was lifted approximately three hours later after the waves subsided. No injuries or damage were reported.

The largest wave, measuring around 50 centimeters, was detected in the Yaene district on Hachijo Island. Smaller waves were also recorded on Kozushima, Miyakejima, and Izu Oshima.

Seismologist Fumihiko Imamura from Tohoku University suggested the tsunami was likely caused by undersea volcanic activity. He urged coastal residents to remain vigilant throughout the advisory period.

Japan is located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region known for its seismic activity, making the country highly susceptible to earthquakes and tsunamis.
