Singapore’s former transport minister, S Iswaran, has pleaded guilty to five charges of corruption and obstruction of justice, ending months of denial and marking a significant event in the city-state’s history. The 62-year-old, known for bringing Formula One to Singapore, was initially charged with 35 offenses, but these were reduced before he admitted to accepting thousands of dollars worth of gifts from businessmen while in office.
The charges stem from his acceptance of gifts including West End show tickets, flights, whisky, and even a Brompton bicycle from property tycoon Ong Beng Seng and Lum Kok Seng, both figures with close ties to Iswaran’s former electoral ward.
Iswaran, the first political officeholder in Singapore to face corruption trial in nearly four decades, has already paid back a significant portion of the gifts’ value and will forfeit the remaining items. Prosecutors, however, argue that he was “more than a passive acceptor” and are seeking a six to seven month prison sentence.
The sentencing date is set for October 3. This case highlights Singapore’s stringent anti-corruption laws and its commitment to transparency, even when it involves high-ranking officials. While the country consistently ranks high in global anti-corruption rankings, this trial reinforces the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, regardless of the individual’s stature.
