Tue Sep 24 02:09:28 UTC 2024: ## Russian Aircraft Spotted Near Alaska, But Not Entering US Airspace

**ANCHORAGE, ALASKA -** The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has confirmed that four Russian aircraft were recently detected flying within the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). While the aircraft operated in close proximity to Alaska, NORAD has assured the public that they did not enter American airspace and remained within international airspace.

“This Russian activity in the Alaska ADIZ occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat,” a NORAD press release stated. The ADIZ is not considered American sovereign airspace and is established to provide a buffer zone for the identification of all aircraft entering the area in the interest of national security.

This recent incident marks the fifth time in September that Russian aircraft have been spotted within the ADIZ. On September 11th, the US and Canada intercepted Russian military aircraft, followed by the detection of two TU-142s on September 13th. Two Russian IL-38 military planes were also detected on September 16th.

Despite these regular occurrences, NORAD has emphasized their readiness to employ various response options to defend North America, should the situation require it. The command utilizes a layered defense network, including satellites, ground-based and airborne radars, and fighter aircraft to track aircraft and ensure appropriate actions are taken.
