**London, UK** – The UK Ministry of Defense has reported that Russia is experiencing an average daily loss of nearly 1,187 soldiers in Ukraine, a number nearly four times higher than during the initial stages of the invasion. This figure, based on an estimated 1,187 daily losses in August, marks a significant increase compared to March 2022 when the average was around 386 soldiers per day.
According to UK officials, the highest daily casualty rate for Russia was reached in May, with an estimated 1,262 soldiers killed, likely due to the intense fighting in Kharkiv. The number has remained above 1,100 since then.
While both Russia and Ukraine have remained tight-lipped about their respective casualty counts, the UK Ministry of Defense estimates that Russia has suffered over 610,000 casualties since the start of the war. These figures far surpass previous estimates, which were closer to 200,000 dead and 400,000 wounded, according to Western intelligence sources.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is estimated to have lost around 80,000 troops, with a further 400,000 injured. However, these figures remain difficult to verify due to the lack of transparency from both sides.
The latest casualty estimates come amidst renewed fighting in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, where a recent Russian airstrike injured 21 people after targeting a high-rise apartment building. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike and called for long-range missiles from Western allies to counter Russia’s attacks.
“Ukraine needs full long-range capabilities, and we are working to convince our partners of this,” Zelensky stated on X during his visit to the United States this week.
