Former USC running back and Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush is taking legal action against his alma mater, the Pac-12, and the NCAA, claiming he was unjustly deprived of potential name, image, and likeness (NIL) compensation during his college career.
Bush’s legal team argues that the NCAA profited significantly from his success through television contracts, merchandise sales, and media rights, while he, like all other athletes at the time, was forbidden from earning any income from his name and likeness.
“This case is not just about seeking justice for Reggie Bush,” stated Evan Selik, Bush’s lawyer. “It’s about establishing a precedent for the fair treatment of all college athletes. Our goal is to rectify this injustice and create a system where athletes are properly recognized, compensated, and treated fairly for their contributions.”
Bush, arguably the biggest college football star in the mid-2000s, had his Heisman Trophy revoked after allegations of impermissible benefits. While USC and the Heisman Trust have recently taken steps to acknowledge his achievements, Bush remains dissatisfied.
“We appreciate that the new administration at USC is trying to make amends for past wrongs,” said Levi G. McCathern II, one of Bush’s attorneys. “However, the delay in addressing this issue speaks volumes.”
This lawsuit adds to Bush’s ongoing legal battle with the NCAA. He previously sued the organization for defamation after a spokesperson accused him of engaging in a “pay-for-play” scheme. This latest case highlights the ongoing debate surrounding athletes’ rights and NIL compensation in college sports.
