Mon Sep 23 21:15:00 UTC 2024: ## Pro-Palestine Protest in Richmond Turns Violent, One Demonstrator Arrested

**Richmond, VA** – A protest organized by the United Anti-Apartheid Movement in Richmond on September 13th turned violent, escalating from a march to a clash with police. The protest, which was initially intended to voice opposition to the Virginia Israel Advisory Board, saw demonstrators throwing rocks at a VCU police car.

One demonstrator, Madeline Rotunda (28), was arrested and charged with two counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer. She was released on recognizance and is due back in court in November.

The protest was sparked by the group’s anger towards the Virginia Israel Advisory Board, which they allege is linked to US-backed Israeli “war crimes.” The group claims they will continue protesting until the Advisory Board is removed from Richmond and Virginia.

The Virginia Israel Advisory Board, however, insists that their work primarily focuses on attracting private Israeli companies to invest in Virginia, generating economic benefits for the state. They have cited research showing Israeli companies contribute $6 billion to Virginia’s gross domestic product.

VCU police released dashcam footage of the protest on September 23rd, showcasing the demonstrators throwing rocks at their patrol vehicle.

This incident highlights the growing tension surrounding the issue of Israel and Palestine, with protests and counter-protests becoming increasingly common across the United States. The situation in Richmond remains volatile, with the United Anti-Apartheid Movement vowing continued action against the Virginia Israel Advisory Board.
