Mon Sep 23 22:04:48 UTC 2024: ## Prince Harry Honors Princess Diana’s Legacy by Championing Mine-Free World

**New York City** – Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, delivered an emotional speech Monday in New York City, highlighting his commitment to fulfilling his late mother, Princess Diana’s legacy by supporting the fight against landmines. The Duke spoke at an event for The HALO Trust, the charity which gained global recognition after Princess Diana’s courageous walk through an active minefield in Angola in 1997.

“Carrying on her legacy is a responsibility that I take incredibly seriously,” Harry stated, visibly moved as he spoke about his mother’s work. He echoed his mother’s call for a global ban on landmines, emphasizing the need to create a “mine-free world.”

Harry recounted his own visit to the same minefield in Angola in 2019, where he walked through the same spot his mother did. “Where she first walked in 1997, I found a bustling, vibrant town,” he described, highlighting the positive impact of mine clearance efforts.

The Duke stressed the urgent need to address the ongoing threat of landmines, especially as he’s become a father himself. “I do know that my mother would have been horrified that anyone’s children or grandchildren would live in a world still infested with mines,” he said.

Beyond Angola, Harry also discussed The HALO Trust’s crucial work in Ukraine, utilizing drones to detect and disable mines. The Duke highlighted the impact of the charity’s awareness campaign which has reached millions of Ukrainians, potentially saving countless lives.

Harry’s visit to New York is part of a busy schedule, including engagements with The Diana Award, the Clinton Foundation, and other charities. He is in the city without his wife, Meghan Markle, who remains in California with their children.
