Mon Sep 23 23:01:46 UTC 2024: ## Shocking Photo of 4,000 Dead Birds Wins Bird Photographer of the Year 2024
A powerful image capturing the tragic death of thousands of birds from window collisions has won the prestigious Bird Photographer of the Year 2024. Canadian photographer Patricia Homonylo’s photo, showing a stark display of deceased birds, serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers posed by reflective surfaces in urban environments.
Homonylo, a conservation photojournalist, has been working with the Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) to rescue birds injured in window collisions. “Each year more than one billion birds die in North America alone due to these collisions,” she stated. The display she captured serves as a solemn tribute to those lost and a call to action for greater public awareness.
The image, which won the overall competition, was selected from over 23,000 entries. Homonylo hopes the impactful visual will encourage people to adopt bird-safe glass and support organizations like FLAP in their efforts to protect these vulnerable creatures.
The Bird Photographer of the Year competition also recognized winners in categories including Best Portrait, Birds in the Environment, and Birds in Flight. All award-winning images are showcased in a coffee-table book published by Princeton University Press and available online at birdpoty.com.
The 2025 competition is now open for entries, inviting photographers to capture the beauty and fragility of birds through their lens.
