**New York, USA:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a bilateral meeting in New York on Monday, marking their second meeting in a month. The meeting comes as the war in Ukraine enters its third year, with the two leaders reiterating their commitment to finding a peaceful resolution.
This latest meeting follows PM Modi’s visit to Ukraine in August, the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister since diplomatic relations were established in 1992. During the August visit, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting peace efforts and pledged India’s willingness to contribute to the return of peace.
The joint statement following the August meeting outlined both leaders’ shared interest in elevating bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. They also emphasized the importance of upholding international law and the principles of the UN Charter, including respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The Indian side has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy, participating in the Summit on Peace in Ukraine in June 2024. The Ukrainian side welcomes India’s involvement and encourages further high-level participation in future peace summits.
PM Modi once again stressed the need for all stakeholders to engage sincerely and develop innovative solutions that can lead to a lasting peace. He reiterated India’s commitment to contributing to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
The Quad Leaders’ Summit, held in Wilmington, Delaware, saw the leaders of the US, Japan, Australia, and India express deep concern over the war in Ukraine and its humanitarian consequences. They emphasized the need for a “comprehensive, just, and lasting peace” in line with international law, respecting the UN Charter’s principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The leaders also highlighted the negative global impact of the war, particularly on food and energy security, especially for developing nations. They stressed the unacceptability of the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons.
PM Modi’s visit to the US, during which he met with several world leaders, including President Biden, further demonstrates India’s commitment to international engagement and peace efforts.
