Tue Sep 24 02:15:41 UTC 2024: ## Pakistani Taliban Denies Involvement in Attack on Diplomatic Convoy in Swat

**SWAT, Pakistan** – The Pakistani Taliban (Tehrik-e Taliban) has denied responsibility for a roadside bombing that targeted a police convoy escorting foreign ambassadors in the restive Swat district on September 22nd.

The attack, which killed one police officer and injured four others, involved a convoy carrying diplomats from Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, and Portugal. They were returning from a tourism promotion event organized by local businessmen in Swat.

Despite the Taliban’s denial, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack.

The incident comes months after a suicide bombing in northwestern Pakistan killed five Chinese nationals working on the Dasu Dam project. This attack prompted increased security measures for foreigners and envoys in the region.

Swat, once a Taliban stronghold, has seen a resurgence of attacks tied to Islamic militarism. Pakistani counterterrorist forces maintain a strong presence in the valley, but the militants have escalated their attacks since late 2022, breaking a ceasefire with the government.

The attack highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Pakistan in its fight against militancy, particularly in the northwest.
