A letter signed by over 700 government officials, including former intelligence officials and high-ranking military personnel, has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president. The letter, reminiscent of the one signed by 51 former intelligence officials claiming the Hunter Biden laptop was Russian disinformation, focuses heavily on criticizing former President Donald Trump while barely mentioning Harris’s own record.
The signatories, described as members of the “Deep State”, include prominent figures like former Obama CIA Directors John Brennan and Michael Hayden, as well as Trump critics like Alexander Vindman and Malcolm Nance. Notably, some Republicans, such as former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, joined Democrats in signing the letter.
The letter praises Harris’s “relentless diplomacy” and her commitment to maintaining a “lethal” military, but it notably omits any mention of her role in the disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal. It also avoids mentioning her record on other issues, focusing instead on Trump’s perceived threat to American democracy.
Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung has dismissed the letter, claiming the signatories are “the same people who got our country into endless foreign wars and profited off of them.” He further highlighted Trump’s record of avoiding new wars, a stark contrast to his predecessors.
The letter’s emphasis on Trump and its omission of critical details about Harris’s record raises questions about its true intentions and the motivations behind its signatories. While some see it as a genuine endorsement, others view it as a partisan effort to bolster Harris’s candidacy while deflecting from her own shortcomings.
