Jared Harris, son of the original Dumbledore actor Richard Harris, has declined to play the legendary wizard in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” series. In an interview with The Independent, Harris said, “No, thank you. Also, I mean, why do it? I don’t understand. The films were fantastic – leave them alone.”
Harris acknowledges that the expanded runtime of the series will allow for more storytelling than the original films, but he’s not interested in inheriting his father’s iconic role.
While Harris is out, the casting process is ongoing, with Variety confirming that the search for the three leads, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, has begun. The casting call seeks children between the ages of 9-11 who are residents of the UK and Ireland and emphasizes an inclusive approach, stating, “For every role, please submit qualified performers, without regard to ethnicity, sex, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law unless otherwise specifically indicated.”
The series, produced by Francesca Gardiner (“Succession,” “His Dark Materials”) and directed by Mark Mylod (“Succession”), is set to premiere on HBO and Max in 2026.
