Mon Sep 23 20:57:59 UTC 2024: ## Liverpool Women Draw in Season Opener, New Signing Smith Impresses
Liverpool FC Women kicked off their Women’s Super League (WSL) season with a 1-1 draw against Leicester City at their new home ground, St Helens Stadium. New signing Olivia Smith, who joined from Sporting CP, had a positive debut and spoke about her experience to Liverpoolfc.com.
Smith, a 20-year-old striker, praised the atmosphere at the new stadium and the support of the fans. “I think the Reds settled in well and all of the fans were amazing,” she said. “I really enjoyed the atmosphere.”
Despite a positive start, Smith acknowledged that the Reds were frustrated with conceding a goal against Leicester. “It was frustrating letting a goal like that against us happen. We just need to stay switched on at all times,” she explained.
Smith also highlighted the positive partnership she has developed with fellow striker, Roman Haug. “She’s so fun to play with – she is strong,” Smith stated. “I think it is very easy to work off her as well. She is strong in the air and I was looking for the flick-ons, and I thought we worked pretty well together.”
Moving forward, Smith hopes that St Helens Stadium will become an intimidating place for opposing teams. “Of course, the wins, but all of our fans making that atmosphere loud for us. Their support means everything. Going into a long, tough season, they are going to be the rock for us,” she said.
Smith emphasized the importance of the fans’ support for the team. “We need more noise and that’s very important the team gets it. We are a very talented team and responding to the fans shouldn’t be a problem for us. So, I’m just very excited and looking forward to the season.”
