**Aurora, Colorado** – The editor of the Aurora Sentinel, Dave Perry, has penned an open letter to former President Donald Trump, urging him to reconsider his planned visit to the city. Perry’s letter, published over the weekend, strongly criticizes Trump’s rhetoric and accuses him of spreading harmful misinformation about the city’s immigrant population.
Trump’s visit was prompted by his widely-debunked claim that a Venezuelan gang had taken over parts of Aurora. This claim, initially fueled by statements from Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman and City Councilmember Danielle Jurinsky, was later refuted by Aurora police.
Perry’s letter directly addresses Trump’s claims, calling them “cruel fabrications” and comparing them to similar tactics used to incite fear and division in other cities. He argues that Trump’s rhetoric, which often targets immigrants and minorities, is harmful to the city’s diverse community and poses a threat to its future.
“This city of almost 400,000 desperately needs assistance, but you’re not offering that,” Perry writes. “You have called them ‘vermin,’ ‘rapists,’ ‘murderers,’ ‘animals,’ and said that, ‘They are destroying the blood of our country.'”
Perry goes on to highlight Aurora’s struggles in accommodating the influx of Venezuelan immigrants and calls for government assistance to support them. He emphasizes that the city needs resources, not inflammatory rhetoric that further demonizes its newest residents.
“What Aurora doesn’t need is for you to demonize these members of our community, or anyone,” Perry concludes. “There is, however, nothing for you here.”
The letter has garnered significant attention, with many applauding Perry’s outspoken criticism of Trump and his divisive rhetoric. It remains to be seen whether Trump will heed Perry’s call and cancel his planned visit to Aurora.
