Wed Sep 25 18:10:40 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai Bathed in Heavy Rains, Red Alert Issued
Mumbai and its surrounding districts of Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Dhule, Nandurbar, and Nashik experienced heavy rainfall on Wednesday, September 25th, 2024, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the city. The alert remains in effect until 8:30 AM on Thursday.
The downpour, which began in the afternoon, resulted in significant waterlogging in various parts of Mumbai, leading to traffic disruptions. The Andheri Subway was closed due to waterlogging, and traffic was diverted via Gokhale Bridge. The Malad Subway was also closed due to waterlogging, with traffic redirected via Sainath Road.
BMC authorities are monitoring the situation from their control room, with officials working tirelessly to alleviate the impact of the downpour.
The heavy rainfall also impacted air travel. Two flights, including one operated by IndiGo, were diverted to Ahmedabad after being denied landing permission due to inclement weather. Several other flights experienced delays and had to circle in the airspace before receiving clearance to land.
The torrential rain was attributed to a combination of factors, including a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, a cyclonic circulation over south Chhattisgarh, and a trough associated with the cyclonic circulation.
Mumbai residents have been advised to avoid stepping out unless necessary. The BMC has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in the city on Thursday, September 26th.
The IMD has predicted “extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds” in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts until 8:30 AM on Thursday.
