**Mumbai:** Travelers flying in and out of Mumbai’s international airport will be able to bring their oversized suitcases on the newly opened Metro 3 line. The underground line boasts larger X-ray scanners capable of accommodating luggage up to the globally permitted size of 32x21x12 inches. However, this convenience won’t extend to other metro lines in the city.
Metro 1, 2A, and 7 have smaller scanners that cannot handle extra-large suitcases, requiring manual inspection. This means travelers with large luggage may face delays and additional scrutiny when transferring between lines.
“Standard baggage scanners are 600×400 mm, so larger luggage needs manual checking,” said an MMRC official. Passengers might be required to open their bags and undergo a scan with handheld metal detectors.
While there are currently no plans to upgrade scanners on the other lines, Metro 3 stations at terminals 1 and 2 will be equipped with baggage trolleys for passenger convenience. The line is also working on a direct connection to the airport terminal building, which is expected to take 1.5-2 years.
In the meantime, passengers will have to navigate a temporary pedestrian path and cross a road to reach the airport terminals.
