**Shillong, Meghalaya:** The Meghalaya State Planning Board (MSPB) has announced plans to submit comprehensive recommendations to the state government for tackling the persistent traffic congestion in Shillong city.
Following a meeting with representatives from the urban, PWD, transport, and home police departments, the board is working on a detailed plan that addresses the various challenges contributing to the traffic bottleneck. The MSPB will continue to meet with relevant departments in the coming days, with the second round of meetings scheduled for next week.
Chairman of the MSPB, Metbah Lyngdoh, emphasized that the board’s role is to recommend solutions for the government. He stated, “We have not reached any conclusions yet but we will be hearing from more line departments and will then prepare comprehensive recommendations.”
One immediate solution proposed by the MSPB is to increase the number of traffic personnel on the ground. The police department highlighted the shortage of manpower, with only 150 constables for 7 police stations. The board will urge the home department to assign more constables to effectively enforce traffic regulations.
Recognizing that Shillong’s unplanned development is a major contributing factor to the traffic problem, Lyngdoh mentioned that the government is currently working towards establishing a new, planned city outside of Shillong. However, he acknowledged the need for immediate solutions to address the congestion in the existing city.
The MSPB is also exploring long-term solutions, with the PWD department scheduled to present detailed proposals on planned road projects aimed at alleviating traffic congestion. The board will also incorporate expert input into its recommendations.
The MSPB is confident that their recommendations will contribute towards a more efficient and less congested Shillong.
