Milwaukee’s $88,000 “Moving City” art car, designed to raise awareness about reckless driving, has broken down just weeks after its launch. The cone-covered truck, created by the Vision Zero initiative, is currently out of commission due to a suspension issue.
Alderman Lamont Westmoreland, a vocal critic of the art piece, expressed frustration with the lack of information regarding the breakdown and its cost. “We don’t even know the costs,” he said, questioning the lack of a pre-planned maintenance plan and the responsibility for the repair bill.
“It’s a slap to the general taxpayers face,” Westmoreland added, highlighting the public funding involved in both the car’s creation and its repair.
Vision Zero, however, maintains that the breakdown is a common issue for vehicles. “As all car owners know, vehicles need maintenance and occasional repairs,” said Jessica Wineberg, Vision Zero Policy Director. She assures the public that the car will be back on the road soon, citing the expertise of their team in repairing various vehicles.
The incident raises questions about the project’s long-term viability and the city’s preparedness for unforeseen expenses. The Milwaukee Arts Board has referred inquiries regarding the repair costs to Mayor Cavalier Johnson’s office, as the board holds independent expenditure authority.
