Mon Sep 23 20:24:16 UTC 2024: ## Pac-12 Expansion Stalls as AAC Schools Rebuff Offers

The Pac-12’s ambitious expansion plans have hit a major snag, as four key targets – Memphis, Tulane, USF, and UTSA – have publicly announced their commitment to remain in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). The schools, considered highly desirable additions due to their strong football programs, released a joint statement emphasizing their “commitment to each other” and the benefits of staying in the AAC.

The decision leaves the Pac-12, which recently added Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State, and San Diego State, in a precarious position. The conference is now scrambling to find at least two more members to complete its rebuild and secure a competitive landscape.

Despite the addition of Gonzaga and potential discussions with Saint Mary’s for basketball, the Pac-12’s quest to become a top football conference outside the Power 4 leagues has been stalled. The uncertainty of financial guarantees and the hefty exit fees from the AAC proved to be major obstacles.

While the Pac-12 offered revenue projections exceeding $12 million, the lack of concrete numbers due to ongoing negotiations with television partners raised concerns for the AAC schools. Additionally, the significant travel costs associated with joining the Pac-12 played a role in their decision.

Meanwhile, the Mountain West Conference is actively working to retain its members, offering enticing incentives to Air Force and UNLV to prevent their departures.

The Pac-12’s expansion efforts are now in a critical juncture. Finding suitable replacements for the AAC schools and securing a lucrative television deal remain crucial steps for the conference to regain momentum and achieve its goal of becoming a major force in college football.
