**Los Angeles, CA -** The Academy Awards have dealt a blow to the critically acclaimed documentary “Kiss the Future”, denying an appeal from producers Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and others to overturn its ineligibility ruling for the 2025 Oscars.
The film, which explores the resilience of Sarajevo residents during the 1990s siege, had a wide release in over 130 AMC theaters nationwide, exceeding the distribution of many documentaries. However, the Academy found it ineligible because it did not screen three times daily in a qualifying market, as required by Oscar rules.
Despite a theatrical release in 139 theaters across major U.S. markets, AMC inadvertently scheduled only two daily screenings in the qualifying New York and Los Angeles areas. The producers appealed, highlighting the film’s wide release and its powerful message of unity and peace during times of global conflict.
In an August 20 letter, they pleaded for reconsideration, highlighting the film’s successful festival run and its theatrical release, which they argued was in line with the Academy’s goal of promoting films in theaters.
“We hope you will allow us the opportunity to attempt to draw more attention to the subject matter,” the producers wrote.
However, the Academy’s Documentary Branch Executive Committee ultimately denied the appeal, citing the film’s “inability to meet the showtime requirements as outlined in the rules.”
The producers expressed disappointment and frustration, particularly given the film’s critical acclaim and the potential for the film to reach a wider audience. Director Nenad Cicin-Sain described the disqualification as “devastating,” noting the film’s timely message amidst global conflicts.
The Academy has acknowledged the unintentional programming error by AMC, but maintains that its eligibility rules must be strictly adhered to ensure fairness and consistency.
“Kiss the Future,” which features interviews with Bono and U2 band members alongside Bosnian survivors, continues to receive critical praise, holding a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film’s Oscar hopes remain dashed despite its impressive release and poignant message.
