Mon Sep 23 23:14:03 UTC 2024: ## Chinese Dissident Artist Ai Weiwei’s Sculpture Vandalized in Bologna Museum

**Bologna, Italy** – A large porcelain sculpture by renowned Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei was shattered on Friday after a man vandalized the artwork at the Palazzo Fava museum. The sculpture, titled “Porcelain Cube,” was on display as part of an exhibition curated by Arturo Galansino.

Security footage shared by Ai on Instagram shows a man smashing the sculpture and then raising the shards above his head before being tackled by museum security. The suspect has been identified as Vaclav Pisvejc, a Czech-born artist known for pulling similar stunts, including attacking Marina Abramović at a book signing in 2018.

Ai expressed shock and dismay at the incident, stating that he never imagined a piece weighing nearly 100 kilos could be damaged so easily. He condemned the act of vandalism, urging people to focus their destructive energy on issues like environmental damage and social injustice instead of destroying art.

Galansino, the exhibition curator, dismissed the vandal as someone seeking attention, stating that he has a history of disrupting exhibitions and seeking contact with prominent artists.

This is not the first time Ai Weiwei’s art has been destroyed. In 2014, a visitor to Miami’s Pérez Art Museum shattered one of his vases in an apparent act of protest. Notably, Ai himself has destroyed artifacts in the name of art, famously photographing himself dropping a Han dynasty urn in 1995.

The motive behind the latest vandalism remains unclear. The incident has sparked discussions about the vulnerability of art in public spaces and the impact of acts of destruction on the cultural landscape.
