Mon Sep 23 21:48:56 UTC 2024: ## Learner Driver Charged with Speeding Death in Brisbane

**Brisbane, Queensland -** A 19-year-old learner driver, Orlando Tauaa, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death while excessively speeding following a fatal crash in Coopers Plains last Thursday.

The crash tragically claimed the life of 35-year-old Tess Watschur, a recent Queensland resident, who was walking on a footpath when struck by a Mitsubishi Lancer driven by Tauaa.

Police allege that Tauaa was travelling at a speed of 144 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on Kessels Rd. The impact reportedly threw Watschur into nearby bushland, where emergency services located her body.

Tauaa, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, was granted bail in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Tuesday. Prosecutors highlighted Tauaa’s alleged recklessness, stating that he was “a learner driver, who took it upon himself to drive dangerously.”

Tauaa, who has no prior criminal history, faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison if found guilty. He has also been charged with driving unaccompanied while a learner.

Under strict bail conditions, Tauaa must surrender his passport and is prohibited from driving any motor vehicles. The case will be heard again on October 14 at Holland Park Magistrates Court.
