**LINCOLN, NE** – Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina has been lobbying Nebraska state officials to switch to a winner-take-all system for awarding Electoral College votes before the November election. Graham argues that Nebraska’s current system, which distributes electoral votes based on congressional districts, could give Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris a crucial vote in the state, despite its overall Republican lean.
Graham met with Nebraska lawmakers last week, emphasizing the potential impact of the Omaha district, a swing district in a solidly Republican state. “To my friends in Nebraska, that one electoral vote could be the difference between Harris being president or not, and she’s a disaster for Nebraska and the world,” Graham stated on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
While several Nebraska state senators support the change, Governor Jim Pillen has indicated he will only call a special session to consider the legislation if there are 33 votes in favor. Pillen, however, has expressed his support for returning to the winner-take-all system.
Republican Senator Pete Ricketts also voiced his support for the change, claiming the current system “dilutes Nebraska’s vote.”
Former President Donald Trump, a vocal advocate for the winner-take-all system, has criticized state senators opposing the change.
The push to change Nebraska’s electoral vote system comes as early voting in the state begins on October 1st. With the election nearing, supporters of the winner-take-all system are hoping to secure the necessary votes before the deadline.
