HBO’s highly anticipated DC Comics series “Lanterns” has secured a major casting coup: Emmy-winning actor Kyle Chandler (“Friday Night Lights”, “The Wolf of Wall Street”) will play legendary Green Lantern Hal Jordan.
The series, described as having a gritty “True Detective” vibe, will follow Jordan as he reluctantly mentors a younger Lantern, John Stewart, in a murder investigation with cosmic implications. Producers are actively seeking a fresh face for the John Stewart role, aiming for a dynamic duo.
Chandler’s casting follows DC’s initial pursuit of Josh Brolin, who ultimately passed on the role. This marks a departure for Chandler, known primarily for his acclaimed television work, into the world of superhero franchises.
“Lanterns” received a direct-to-series order back in June and boasts a powerhouse creative team including Chris Mundy (“Ozark”), Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”), and Eisner Award-winning comic writer Tom King. The trio is co-writing and executive producing, with Mundy serving as showrunner.
Casting continues alongside director searches as the project gears up for production, slated to begin in January and run through June 2024 in Atlanta.
