New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson’s season has already been delayed due to a lingering foot injury. Robinson, known for his vulnerability to injury, is still recovering from surgery on his left foot and is aiming for a December/January return, according to league sources. The Knicks are being cautious with Robinson’s recovery, aiming for a full return to prevent further setbacks.
The injury stems from a fracture Robinson suffered in December, forcing him to miss 50 games before returning for the playoffs. However, a re-injury sustained in a physical battle with Joel Embiid in the first round of the playoffs resulted in another surgery in May. Speculation surrounds the play that caused the re-injury, with many pointing to a questionable tackle by Embiid in Game 3.
Robinson’s extended absence leaves a significant gap in the Knicks’ frontcourt, especially after Isaiah Hartenstein’s departure to the Thunder in free agency. While the Knicks have been exploring the trade market for a center, they currently express confidence in the roster’s depth and versatility. Jericho Sims, a young and athletic player, will likely step up as the primary center replacement, having benefited from consistent training since August.
The Knicks also have Precious Achiuwa, who played both power forward and center last season, and could potentially utilize Julius Randle at the center position for short stretches, despite defensive concerns. Coach Tom Thibodeau has acknowledged the need to rely on a “committee” approach for the center position due to Robinson’s absence.
