Wed Sep 25 06:55:42 UTC 2024: ## Karnataka Launches First-of-its-Kind Social Security Scheme for Transport Workers
**Bengaluru, India** – The Karnataka government has launched a groundbreaking social security scheme for unorganised workers in the transportation sector, aiming to provide coverage for an estimated 5.4 million individuals. This initiative, announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, marks the first of its kind in India.
The “Motor Transport and Allied Workers Social Security and Welfare Rules” were introduced in July and aim to provide crucial benefits to workers across various roles within the transportation industry. These benefits include access to healthcare, insurance, and other social security measures, designed to ensure the well-being and protection of these workers.
“This initiative reflects our belief in inclusive development, ensuring that the benefits of progress reach every segment of society,” stated Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at the inaugural ceremony of the SAFE (Society for Automotive Fitness and Environment) annual convention.
The convention, themed “United Efforts for Road Safety: Our Roads, Our Responsibility,” also saw the Chief Minister highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing road safety measures. He spoke about ongoing collaborations with central agencies and private stakeholders to improve road infrastructure, including the creation of safer junctions, enhanced signage and markings, and addressing accident-prone “black spots.”
Mr. Siddaramaiah further emphasized the use of technology in traffic enforcement, with initiatives like speed cameras, AI-enabled red-light violation detection systems, and integrated traffic management centers. He cited the example of the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, where smart systems implementation has resulted in a significant reduction in accidents and fatalities.
This comprehensive approach to both social security and road safety is a testament to the Karnataka government’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens and the safety of its roadways.
