The Film Federation of India (FFI) has selected “Laapataa Ladies,” directed by Kiran Rao, as India’s official entry for the Best International Film category at the 2025 Academy Awards. The decision, made by a 13-member committee headed by acclaimed filmmaker Jahnu Barua, has sparked discussion on social media, with some praising the choice while others express disappointment that Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light” wasn’t chosen.
Barua, in an exclusive interview with India Today, highlighted the film’s unique portrayal of women’s issues and its exploration of the beauty within social chaos. He emphasized the film’s potential to resonate with a global audience, highlighting its representation of societal problems often overlooked.
However, the committee’s choice has been met with criticism, particularly regarding the press release which began with the statement: “Indian women are a strange mixture of submission and dominance…” Barua defended the statement, urging people to take it “sportingly” and understand the context of the film’s portrayal of Indian societal dynamics.
He also expressed concern over the lack of Indian films receiving international recognition, especially an Oscar win. He emphasized the need for filmmakers to focus on films representing India on a global stage, and acknowledged the FFI’s challenge in selecting a single film from the vast number of Indian productions.
Barua further highlighted the need for a system to ensure that the country’s best films are sent to international competitions, highlighting the possibility of missing out on deserving entries due to a lack of awareness.
The debate surrounding the selection of “Laapataa Ladies” raises important questions about the role of the FFI in promoting Indian cinema internationally and the need for a more comprehensive approach to ensuring that India’s cinematic talent is recognized on a global platform.
