**Rio de Janeiro, Brazil** – Arnel Pineda, the lead singer of rock band Journey, has offered to step down from the band after receiving criticism for his performance at the recent Rock in Rio festival in Brazil.
Pineda, who joined the band in 2007, was visibly affected by the backlash, claiming that his ear monitors malfunctioned during the show, causing difficulties with his vocals. He expressed his disappointment on Facebook, saying, “No one more than me in this world feels so devastated about this,” and lamented that the negative feedback overshadows his previous accomplishments.
In a bid to appease critics and give fans a say in the band’s future, Pineda launched an online poll, asking fans to vote whether he should “GO” or “STAY.” He promised to leave the band for good if the “GO” option reaches one million votes.
Journey guitarist Neal Schon, who discovered Pineda on YouTube, has defended his bandmate, dismissing the online criticism as “bought” and urging him to ignore the negativity.
Pineda’s emotional response follows the band’s recent 50th anniversary celebration and reflects the pressure associated with filling the shoes of Journey’s original frontman, Steve Perry, who left the band in 1998.
This incident raises questions about the impact of online criticism on musicians, especially those who have faced public scrutiny for taking over iconic roles. It remains to be seen how fans will respond to Pineda’s plea and what the future holds for the iconic rock band.
