Mon Sep 23 21:44:43 UTC 2024: ## First Lady Unveils $500 Million Plan to Address Women’s Health Inequities

**New York, NY** – First Lady Jill Biden announced a new initiative aimed at tackling health disparities faced by women in the United States, pledging at least $500 million annually for women’s health research.

The announcement was made during the first day of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) annual meeting in New York, a gathering of political, business, and philanthropic leaders working to address global challenges.

The funding, primarily from the Department of Defense, will focus on understanding why active-duty and retired military women, and their families, experience endocrine, hematological, and immunity-related disorders at twice the rate of men.

“Our nation is home to the best health research in the world, yet women’s health is understudied and research is underfunded,” stated First Lady Biden. “We still know too little about how to effectively prevent, diagnose, and treat a range of health conditions in women, from heart disease to cancers.”

The initiative is among several commitments announced at the CGI meeting, which this year focuses on identifying “What’s Working” in addressing global issues.

In another notable announcement, a coalition of 15 nonprofits and humanitarian aid organizations, including The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Global Giving, have pledged at least $2 million to support mutual aid groups in Sudan, which is facing a humanitarian crisis following more than a year of conflict. The coalition plans to raise an additional $4.5 million over the next two years.

“It gets us started,” said Patricia McIlreavy, president of the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, who represents the coalition. “And it models the behavior you want to see from others.”

The CGI meeting continues to highlight global challenges and potential solutions through discussions and presentations from leaders in various fields.
