Mon Sep 23 18:02:46 UTC 2024: ## Antisemitic Hate Crimes Surge in 2023, FBI Report Reveals

**Washington, D.C.** – The FBI’s 2023 Hate Crimes Report released on Monday revealed a disturbing trend: antisemitic hate crimes accounted for a staggering 67% of all religiously motivated hate crimes, marking an 11% increase from the previous year. The report documented 1,832 antisemitic hate crimes in 2023, a figure the American Jewish Committee (AJC) considers a significant underestimation due to the widespread underreporting of hate crimes across the nation.

The FBI recorded a variety of incidents, including property damage, vandalism, and intimidation. While most occurred at home, some targeted synagogues and other places of worship. The AJC highlighted the alarming disparity: “Despite Jews only accounting for 2% of the US population, the community was the target of 68% of religiously motivated hate crimes committed in 2023.”

The report’s release comes in the wake of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which fueled a rise in violence and harassment against Jewish communities across North America. Ted Deutch, CEO of the AJC, expressed concern, stating, “The 1,832 reported antisemitic crimes – a staggering 63% increase from last year – have taken a severe toll on so many American Jews’ way of life.”

Secure Community Networks (SCN) commended law enforcement agencies for their efforts in disrupting extremist plots and bringing offenders to justice. However, they emphasized the need for accurate data collection to better understand evolving threats and protect communities. SCN National Director & CEO Michael Masters noted the “unprecedented threat environment” facing Jewish communities, particularly after the Hamas attacks.

Despite the FBI’s improved data collection, experts believe the true extent of antisemitism in the United States is likely far greater than the reported numbers. Many major cities still fail to report hate crimes effectively, leaving a large portion of the issue hidden.

The surge in antisemitic hate crimes serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance and action to combat hate and ensure the safety and security of all Americans, regardless of their faith.
