Mon Sep 23 21:54:13 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka Triumphs in First Test Against New Zealand
**Galle, Sri Lanka:** Sri Lanka secured a convincing 63-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test match, ending the Black Caps’ hopes of a comeback on a challenging pitch.
The decisive blow came courtesy of Prabath Jayasuriya, who snagged five wickets in the final morning, finishing with a match haul of nine wickets. Jayasuriya’s performance, reminiscent of Sri Lankan spin legends like Muttiah Muralitharan and Rangana Herath, proved too much for the New Zealand batsmen.
New Zealand, chasing a target of 275, were bowled out for 211, despite a valiant knock from Rachin Ravindra, who top-scored with 92 runs. However, Ravindra’s resistance was broken when Jayasuriya trapped him lbw, ending a crucial innings that had kept New Zealand in the game.
“When you come to Galle, all that you need to do is to stick to the basics,” said Jayasuriya, who was named man-of-the-match. “The wicket provides plenty of assistance, and you just need to bowl with discipline.”
New Zealand skipper Tim Southee expressed disappointment, acknowledging that they had “thrown the game away” despite holding a strong position earlier.
Despite the loss, the New Zealand bowlers also had their moments. Ajaz Patel claimed 6-90 in Sri Lanka’s second innings, the best figures by a New Zealand bowler in Sri Lanka since 1998.
The second and final Test of the series will take place at the same venue, Galle, starting on Thursday.
