Mon Sep 23 21:48:06 UTC 2024: ## Noto Peninsula Faces Double Whammy: Earthquake and Floods Leave Resident Homeless Again
**Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture** – Shoichi Miyakoshi, a 76-year-old former sushi chef, is facing yet another hardship after the recent heavy rains flooded his temporary home on the Noto Peninsula. The floods come just months after a devastating earthquake in January, leaving him without a permanent home for the second time in 17 years.
Miyakoshi lost his wife, Kiyomi, in a 2007 earthquake on the peninsula. Now, with his temporary accommodation destroyed by the latest floods, he is forced to start anew, worried about the upcoming winter and the uncertainty of finding a permanent dwelling.
The Noto Peninsula has been severely impacted by both the January earthquake and the recent floods. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.5, caused widespread destruction and claimed 374 lives. The heavy rains over the weekend caused landslides and overflowing rivers, resulting in seven deaths and leaving thousands of households without power.
While the government has pledged $1.7 billion in relief efforts for the earthquake reconstruction, Miyakoshi’s situation highlights the ongoing struggles of many residents. The former chef lost precious photos and his wife’s ashes in the flood, making his situation all the more difficult.
“I thought I was finally settled here and would have a warm winter around the next New Year’s Day,” Miyakoshi said, sifting through his belongings covered in mud. “I have to start over, through another cold winter.”
His story highlights the resilience of the Japanese people in the face of natural disasters, but also the ongoing need for support and aid in the recovery process.
