Tue Sep 24 18:46:12 UTC 2024: ## Israel and Hezbollah Escalate Conflict Amidst UN Calls for De-escalation

**Beirut and Tel Aviv -** Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah escalated dramatically on Tuesday, with both sides conducting extensive strikes across the border. Israel launched a wave of airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, including the group’s stronghold in Beirut’s southern suburbs. The strikes claimed the life of Ibrahim Muhammad Qubaisi, the commander of Hezbollah’s rocket and missile division, and resulted in the deaths of six civilians and injuries to 15 others, according to Lebanese authorities.

In retaliation, Hezbollah fired over 50 rockets into northern Israel, targeting military installations, including an explosives factory and the Megiddo airfield. Israeli officials claim most of the rockets were intercepted, but the attacks forced the evacuation of thousands of civilians from their homes.

The escalation comes as world leaders gather at the UN General Assembly in New York, where calls for de-escalation are growing. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, vowed to continue the offensive against Hezbollah, accusing the group of leading Lebanon “to the edge of the abyss.” He urged Lebanese citizens to evacuate areas where Hezbollah has stored weaponry, warning that those who remain will be responsible for their own safety.

Amidst the escalating conflict, concerns have been raised about the possibility of a wider conflict involving the US and Iran, who have strong ties to Israel and Hezbollah respectively. The EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, described the situation as almost a “full-fledged war.”

Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict have so far yielded little progress. Israel has insisted that the airstrikes are aimed at forcing Hezbollah to agree to a diplomatic solution, cease its attacks, or withdraw from the border. Experts, however, question the effectiveness of military pressure in achieving such objectives.

The humanitarian impact of the conflict is immense, with thousands of Lebanese and Israelis fleeing their homes in fear. The displaced are struggling to find shelter and basic necessities, and the situation is expected to worsen as the conflict continues.
